MGH fires a shot across the Baltimore ad scene's bow.

UPDATE: R2inegrated throws down its own gauntlet to MGH in the comments section: "We (R2integrated) agree that this is the best thing that could happen to Baltimore and have proposed the following to the MGH management team on their Facebook page:

MGH: We loved the ad, and think you've raised some good points on the value of FB likes and social media in general. R2integrated is wondering if MGH would be up for a live, in-depth Q&A on the state/future of social media featuring your pres., Andy Malis, and our CEO, Matt Goddard, moderated by the The Baltimore Sun and streamed to a national audience and, of course, to all of our FB fans. Thoughts?

From the Check Out the Balls on These Guys department:

MGH uses a full page ad in the Baltimore Sun to call out the competition - by name.

Our take: Finally! This is just what this town needs - a little attitude...and a graph to back it up. While Facebook fans may not be the best barometer of an agency's worth, it definitely cuts a striking figure. Especially for non-industry audiences. We like it.

Any B'more agencies looking to respond to this one? We can only hope.

Well, they are also the only agency buying ads to ask people to become a friend on Facebook. I wouldn't call having to buy friends a real comparison. We all know who did that in high school. If everybody loves them, they surely would have gotten the friend network to win the Egotists competition easily right???? Lets see what the results say later today.

I think its great that they gave all those other agencies some free publicity. Thanks, MGH! Happy New Year, to you, too!

Oh, and don't forget to check out Twitter followers of similar agencies, since it seems that number of followers is what we are measuring success on. Looks like you aren't THAT ahead of the pack.

"Attitude", really? I'd call that something else. Besides the fact that it's completely unprofessional, they are also insulting the consumer's intelligence: that one's marketing campaign success is truly measured by the number of unqualified friends?!

I'm with you, Joe. It may be ballsy but that bar chart doesn't mean much: http://adage.com/influencers2010/article?article_id=147957 If anything, it makes it seem like MGH doesn't know where the true value of social media lies.

YEAH, WELL THE JERK STORE CALLED AND THEY'RE RUNNING OUT OF YOU!

flawed logic, if you ask me. so what if you have a zillion facebook friends. how about increasing revenue?

They advertised in a newspaper. Of course a general audience is going to buy into simple info graphic. The sad thing is they could they run the same ad in Ad Age and get away with it too. Good for them. People are dumb. Use it against them.

Dumbest ad ever!

Hey Ed, how's the "social media domination" thing going? Heard your dominator flew the coop.

Dear digital agencies,

You're welcome.

Love,
Al
